old music for new people

crush on you September 21, 2008

this nkotb reunion is making me feel 14 again – without actually having to be 14 again.

reasons to be thankful for not being 14:

  • that aching feeling you had all year
  • fancying totally unattainable men
  • being mortified by your parents
  • having to choose cool friends over friends you actually liked
  • having to wear the same outfit outside of school, for most of the year
  • hating your skin, hair, everything about yourself
  • having no cash

who influenced prince? July 13, 2008

we always talk about artists who we believe are inspired by prince, but less so on who originally inspired his purpleness.

prince has pretty much created a recognisable sound of his own but there are elements of many artists of the 60s and 70s.

we don’t need an excuse to post about prince here at dirtymartini:

a post of prince duets, featuring beyonce, angie stone, madonna to name a few

a post of 2007/8 tracks that sounds some suspiciously like prince

the perfect prince set list, inspired by the o2 tour

some more tracks that bit off a huge chunk of purple greatness

recent and not so recent examples of how a little purple goes a long way

some rare prince tracks that everyone should own

the many artists who owe some success to prince

my first ever post was a homage to the vault of unreleased prince tracks

the purple hook-up April 20, 2008

apparently prince would like to duet with amy winehouse and she has rightly said she would be there with bells on if that rumour is true.

after beyonce’s shameless showboating at the grammys, it’s lucky he’ll consider sharing the stage with anyone.

regular readers will know i love me some prince:

as do the current r&b cognoscenti

my fantasy prince setlist, should he ever do another greatest hits tour

last summer, i saw him at the o2…sigh

prince’s protegees for even more purple magic

my first ever post included rare prince material

some artists needed a little princespiration

even more artists jacked his style

prince and angie stone – sunshine

prince and george clinton – we can funk

prince and jill jones – my baby knows how 2 love me

the perfect prince set list December 13, 2007

i saw prince at the o2. as you may know, he played short (just over an hour) sets and switched the set list every night.

we got 7, cream, purple rain, kiss, controversy, i feel for you, u got the look and acoustic snippets of diamonds and pearls, raspberry beret, little red corvette and the beautiful ones. i’m not complaining, but it left me wanting to hear the other 200 or so prince tracks on my ipod, live.

now as long as i’m not in the nosebleed section again – how steep is level 4 at the o2?? – my dream is that prince will return. after all, if the rolling stones were to be believed in their pre-concert marketing hype, their last 50 or so concerts have been ‘your last chance to see the stones – ever’. right. one you can safely hold your breath on. my mum actually believed this threat during the latest tour and finally went to see them.

so if friends and sex and the city can reunite, ricky gervais can write more ‘office’ and take that, boyzone, the spice girls and countless others can reunite, best believe this is not the last we will see of prince on tour. PLEASE.

and if he does, this is my fantasy set list. as far as i could whittle it down.

check out my previous prince at the o2 post, some rare prince, the rest of the paisley park family and those that tried to jack his style anyway and even more attempts to steal his sound.

the fresh prince of the o2 August 30, 2007

ok so i am going to see prince this week at the o2 stadium, and i’m getting a little excited.

i’m not a concert goer really, i have to really want to see an artist. prince has done a really good thing for his fans – firstly he’s kept ticket prices down and secondly he’s promised to sing what his fans want to hear. say what you want about his eccentricities but these actions speak volumes about his commitment to his fans.

to get myself in the mood, here are some more rare prince tracks, as a sequel to my first ever post. also check out those he produced for and those who went ahead and adopted his sound anyway…

9 lives

originally written for cat glover and then turned into an unreleased morris day and the time track recorded for their 1990 album, pandemonium. the bassline sounds a bit like ‘7’ but this is more uptempo.

acknowledge me

unreleased track from the gold experience sessions that actually samples two other unreleased tracks from the 80s. very typical of prince’s early 90s output.

all day all night

a 1984 outtake, which probably means it was intended for around the world in a day. ended up on jill jones’ album three years later.

baby gogo

written for nona hendryx in 1986. i haven’t heard her version but i love the production on his.

extra loveable

one of my absolute favourite unreleased prince tracks – can only have been left off ‘1999’ due to the controversial lyrcis. but aren’t most of his lyrics controversial?

i wonder

written for purple rain, left off, then  prince returned to it 8 years later to rerecord new vocals. still unreleased despite being a fan favourite.

if i love you tonight

written in 1979 for an early incarnation of prince’s band the revolution,. actually released 11 years later by mica paris.

irresistible bitch

originally a 1982 b-side, then rerecorded for the abandoned camille project, with wendy and lisa on backup.

love..thy will be done/martika’s kitchen

former disney kid martika’s first album was pop fluff and covers. for her second album, prince provided her with a ready made set including these two songs.

miss understood

outtake from the 1984 project ‘the family’.

part of ‘the symbol’ sessions, this is a nice laid back tune.

the sex of it

written for and recorded by kid creole, but i prefer prince’s version.
