cheesy quavers October 2, 2008

funny, i didn’t really like old skool when it wasn’t old. i thought most of it sounded scary. now it reminds me of boy racers who you could hear ten minutes before they arrived, underage nights out and sounds a hell of a lot better than the ish kids have to put up with now.

i used to go the clubs, sterns in worthing usually, with my boyfriend. i never enjoyed it as it was usually on a thursday night and i had school the next day and I was slightly worried that my parents would discover that I was 1. not really staying with a friend 2. off my head 3. a good hour away from my hometown.

fortunately they were ‘hey, we used to go clubbing when we were 15, its cool just don’t get too drunk/arrested/into a car with anyone you don’t know’. so they were happy enough to let me go clubbing (sort of) but trusted me a bit too much.

i recently revealed all on my clubbing years to my mum, more than 15 years on, and if we still lived in the same house, I think i would be grounded for the next 15 years…

barefoot in the head September 17, 2008

it’s getting towards the end of the decade again…yikes.

i can remember this feeling ten years ago. that ‘shit, was that the 90s?’ feeling. even though i started the 90s as a child, it seemed like it went too fast. i’m not looking forward to all those shows and compilations to start appearing, showcasing the 00s.

anyway, to combat this feeling that time is running away with us, rewind to the early 90s. pretend it was all a dream, like bobby in dallas. and if you’re old enough to know what the hell i’m talking about there, you will be shitting yourself at the thought of the end of another decade too.

garage city: masters at work June 25, 2008

by 1993 it was clear that us heavyweights david morales and masters at work would define the 90s garage scene. david went for the house crowd with vocal club bangers and the big money remixes. masters at work retained their latin flavour and took on leftfielders like jamiroquai and brand new heavies.

i made my first trip to the ministry of sound that year and was almost perplexed by the alcohol free bar and bizarre location. a million miles from the clubs up and down the country who were rocking the hell out of ‘oh carolina’ and ‘mr vain’ and peddling test tube cocktails.

how different my 17th birthday could have been if I had lived in London and able to frequent the ministry more often…instead of technicolour vomit and fat djs I could have been shaking it to a legend.

big fish little fish June 16, 2008

for those who were too young, think the flashback scene in ‘human traffic’. whistles, vicks, big fish little fish cardboard box.

actually i was too young but on the odd night i managed to sneak out to a rave, at legendary south coast club sterns, with my older boyfriend who had delusions of dj grandeur.

this mix is a nod to the inbetween years – post-acid house but more balearic and trippy than hardcore. when rave wasn’t a dirty word.

this was true warehouse rave. dancing in a field until 6am before that idiotic criminal justice act. the prodigy, autechre and orbital all protested by releasing non-repetitive beats and printed digs at the new law. where is it now?

garage city: do you want it right now May 14, 2008

in 1992, some enduring garage classics arrived – the robin s, degrees of motion and shawn christopher classics in this mix are still played out in garage sets today, 16 years on.

1992 was my favourite year, there was just something about it. i just about passed my gcse’s after ‘studying’ on the beach during revision leave. spent the summer alternating between downing bottles of 20/20 wine on the sea front to flashing my fake id at lazy bouncers and most of the time, getting away with it.

then i started college and within the space of a year everything had changed. my college was full of grungey indie kids and goths, but we managed to co-exist.

digital reality May 4, 2008

fractals were big in 90s clubland. low budgets meant artists and record labels needed to be creative in order to get their videos on totp. there are countless low budget clips of djs, producers and random girls swaying awkwardly behind a keyboard.

others, notably the progressive house community, opted for computer-generated fractals. clubs picked up on the trend and installed big screens for wide eyed clubbers to fixate on as they danced.

progressive house was a hybrid of house and trance that built incrementally, hence the name. it was especially popular oop north but the south did hold its own with clubs like final frontier at club uk and whoop it up at the velvet rooms and gardening club.

mtv used to show those x-mix videos in full late at night back then and back from my underage drinking sessions, i would sit fixated for hours until my mum yelled at me to turn it off and get to bed.
